At a recent advocacy summit hosted by the American Medical Association (AMA) the organization’s president, Dr. Patrice Harris, spoke about the need for health care policy debates to include patient advocacy by physicians.

Dr. Harris said that through its advocacy efforts, the AMA serves as the collective physician community’s voice on important issues.

She outlined six of the top advocacy issues the AMA will focus on this year:

  • Prior authorization
  • Surprise medical bills
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Opioid epidemic
  • E-cigarettes and vaping
  • Gun violence
