IN A NUTSHELL

  • Best time to set work goals is before the new year
  • Important to give yourself personal time and attention
  • Spend time with family and friends

There is less than one month to go before 2019 ends and 2020 begins. You may want to consider a few end-of-year tasks to start the new year on the right foot.

Set Work Goals
Before the new year begins is a perfect opportunity to establish personal work goals. Perhaps you can challenge yourself to accomplish a goal that will improve yourself as a worker as well as your company. You can also set goals that will improve your skills, help you grow as a person, make you happy, and strengthen your career.

Organize Your Inbox
The end of the year is a great time to go through all of your old emails and delete the ones you thought were important but you never used. You can organize all of the articles/publications you were planning to read and never did while deleting all of the irrelevant topics. You can create folders for all of the important emails that you still need to keep for 2020. Lastly, unsubscribe from mailing lists that are no longer relevant to avoid unnecessary clutter and missing out on important emails.

Unplug From Technology
Responding to emails throughout the day and maintaining an active online presence can be tedious. Though it has become commonplace within our society to spend an excessive amount of time behind the screen—it’s not healthy.

Become Familiar With New Health Care Industry Trends
Make sure you brush up on what health care trends are expected to break grounds in 2020. Get ahead of the game so that there are no surprises and you can impress your peers with your up-to-date knowledge of the industry. Some of the trends expected to shape the health care industry in 2020 include 3D printing, Natural Language Processing, Blockchain technology for information exchange, and Machine Learning.

Spend Some Time on Self-Reflection
The end of the year does not need to be entirely career focused. It is also quite important to spend some time on self-reflection. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself:

  • What were the big events?
  • What were the small events?
  • What moments created joy?
  • Who and what am I thankful for?

Spend Time With Family and Friends
Remember to spend time doing activities that foster connection and joy. One of the best activities you can do to close out the year is to be with friends and family. There is no replacement for reconnecting with your loved ones. You can ask them some questions about the past year that you asked yourself.

Engage in an Artistic Project
Creative expression can offer improved physical and mental health, positive emotions, and inspiration for the new year. Think about committing yourself to a creative project during any time off at the close of 2019. If you are unsure about what to do, try a new arts and crafts hobby or pick up a musical instrument.
